Procedure Information

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure offered at the Melbourne Institute of Plastic Surgery that can tighten the skin around the eyes for a more youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty may even improve vision for those whose eyelids are drooping low enough to interfere with their eyesight.

Who does this procedure suit?

Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty are those experiencing signs of aging around the eyes or those with inherited traits like under-eye bags. It’s perfect for individuals seeking a fresher, more alert appearance. Candidates should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcomes.

What results can I expect?

After the procedure, can look forward to a more youthful, refreshed appearance. The changes, while subtle, significantly impact your overall facial expression, offering a natural yet noticeable rejuvenation. The best part? These improvements are long-lasting, ensuring you enjoy your new look for years to come.

What’s the first step to take?

Your journey begins with a detailed consultation. During this meeting, your surgeon will discuss your goals and expectations, assess your eyelids, and explain the procedure’s nuances. This session is crucial for understanding the potential results and addressing any concerns you might have.

How do I prepare for surgery?

The following actions are recommended for a smooth procedure and recovery:

  • Arrange for someone to drive you home post-surgery and assist you for a few days.
  • Avoid certain medications and supplements that may increase bleeding, like aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E, two weeks before surgery.
  • Quit smoking well in advance of the surgery to promote better healing.
  • Inform your surgeon about any medications or supplements you are taking, including herbal ones.

What happens on the day of my surgery?

Bring necessary items and wear comfortable clothes. If your surgery is in the morning, fast from midnight. For afternoon surgeries, don’t eat or drink after 8 a.m.

What should I expect during surgery?

Blepharoplasty will be performed under general or local anaesthesia—depending on the requirements of the patient. It may be performed on all four eyelids or only the top or bottom. During the procedure, one of our surgeons will make incisions into the natural creases around the eyes. For upper eyelid surgery, the incision will be made in the crease just above the eyelid. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision will be made just below the lashes. The surgeon will then remove any excess fat under the skin, trim off extra skin and muscles, and close the incisions with very fine stitches.

What should I expect after surgery?

Anticipate some bruising and swelling, with possible temporary changes in vision. Pain medication will help with any discomfort. Most people resume normal activities within 10-14 days, but full recovery can take a bit longer.

What are the risks and complications with this procedure?

Every surgical procedure has its inherent risks, and blepharoplasty is no exception. Although these complications are rare, they may include:

  • Bleeding and Hematoma: There may be a risk of bleeding beneath the skin, leading to a collection of blood (hematoma) which might require surgical intervention to correct.
  • Scarring and Infection: While scars are usually well-hidden and fade over time, there’s a small risk of noticeable scarring or infection, which can be managed with proper care and medication.
  • Changes in Sensation: Temporary or, in rare cases, permanent changes in eyelid sensation may occur.
  • Dry Eyes: Some patients may experience dry eyes post-surgery, typically resolving within a few weeks.
  • Asymmetry and Revision Surgery: Occasionally, there might be minor asymmetry between the eyelids, potentially necessitating revision surgery.
  • Vision Problems: Very rarely, patients might experience temporary or, in extremely rare cases, permanent vision changes.

This being said, getting treated by an experienced surgeon and following their guidelines can greatly mitigate these risks.

It’s also important to remember that Blepharoplasty is a significant decision. Understanding the process, benefits, and risks is key. We’re here to guide you through every step.
