Calf Implants

Calf implants or calf augmentation is a poular procedure that will create a cosmetic fullness in the lower leg area. Calf implants are best suited for lower leg sculpting and can also correct muscle imbalance as a result of both physical and congenital defects such as clubfoot, spina bifida, polio and disproportionate calf development.

The calf implants are made of a solid but soft silicone and once inserted they look very natural.  The shape and size of the implant can be tailored to the specific requirements of the patient.

The implants are placed through an incision behind the knees and thefore any scarring is quite hidden.  The underlying tissue is raised off the existing muscle and the implants are placed on top of the existing calf muscle.

The procedure is performed in a day surgery under general anaesthessia and may take anyway between 1 to 2 hours.  Post surgery, you will be in some discomofort and be required to elevate your legs to reduce swelling. You will also be required to "bed rest" for up to 5 days so as to reduce the risk of swelling, bleeding and movement of the implants.  Depending on your job, you will be required to take 2 to 4 weeks leave. Excercise can begin after 6 to 8 weeks.

As with all surgical procedures, there are associated risks. Risks with this procedure include bleeding, infections, DVT and malposition.

The procedure is performed by Mr Morris Ritz (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon)
