Microdermabrasion – Who is an Ideal Candidate?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive skin treatment that can improve the appearance of many skin conditions. It has been used to successfully treat acne scarring, diminish fine lines and wrinkles, and produce a more uniform skin texture and tone. During treatment, microcrystals are prayed over the skin to exfoliate and smooth out imperfections. If significant scar or wrinkle reduction is desired, there are other options such as dermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing.
Ideal candidates for microdermabrasion are adults in good general health, who have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. Microdermabrasion can improve the skin’s appearance, but it cannot make severely disfigured skin look flawless. More in-depth treatments could be required for deep scarring, raised keloid scars, and significant discoloration.
Patients with rosacea, which is a discoloration of the skin caused by prominent blood vessels, should consult their dermatologist before they have microdermabrasion. While this procedure can help control the redness caused by rosacea, it can also have an adverse effect that makes the irritation worse. The same is true for patients with eczema or dermatitis. A pre-treatment consultation will give you the opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of microdermabrasion with your cosmetic dermatologist.
Microdermabrasion is not recommended for patients with sagging skin, deep creases, facial warts, or diseases which suppress the immune system or the body’s ability to heal (these patients may be better served with facelift surgery). Patients with severe acne might benefit from other therapies before undergoing microdermabrasion to minimize scars, though microdermabrasion has been known to improve acne by unclogging pores and reducing oil production.
In general, patients with mild to moderate skin defects can benefit from microdermabrasion. Fortunately, there are plenty of options for patients who need more in-depth treatments. For example, patients with deep wrinkles might require a facelift to return their skin to a more youthful appearance. Ask your plastic surgeon to recommend the skin rejuvenation treatment that’s best for you.
