Types of Breast Implants

There are two basic types of breast implants currently available to consumers: silicone gel implants and saline implants. Both types of implants are contained within a silicone shell that can be either smooth or textured. Recently, some surgeons have begun to offer hybrid implants that contain both silicone and saline. Regardless of the type of implant a patient chooses, the shape, texture, and size of the implant can be customized to reflect a patient's individual body type and aesthetic goals.

Breast Augmentation with Silicone Breast Implants

Of the two most common types of breast implants, the most controversial by far has been the silicone gel implant. The safety of silicone gel implants was widely questioned, both within and outside of the medical community, leading the FDA to restrict their use within the United States. Recently, the FDA has found that, due partially to the improved construction of these implants, silicone gel implants are a reasonably safe option for women undergoing breast augmentation. With silicone implants, a fixed amount of silicone gel is placed inside an outer shell; the silicone within the implant feels remarkably like natural breast tissue to the touch.

Breast Augmentation with Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants differ from silicone gel implants in that they can be filled at the time of the surgery. Because of this, the insertion of the implants generally requires a smaller incision than that associated with silicone gel implants. This type of saline breast implant can also be adjusted after surgery, which is not possible with fixed silicone gel implants. Saline implants can also be filled by the surgeon prior to surgery; the implants have a valve through which the saline is inserted, which is then sealed by the plastic surgeon. Both types of implants have their own unique advantages and risks. If you are considering breast augmentation, schedule a consultation with an experienced cosmetic surgeon to determine which type of implant is best suited to you.
